Genesis 1-2; Moses 2-3 and Abraham 4-5

Below are the quotes that were used in the video.

As a part of Heavenly Father's plan, our Earth was created by Jesus Christ. Knowing that God create the world for us and that we were created in His image helps us to understand our potential. These truths help us in how we see ourselves and others and can influence our daily discipleship. As we study the creation process this week, we will look for how it blesses us today and helps us prepare for our return to our Heavenly Parents. 

​A spiritual creation, then physical creation:
  • The Lord created all things spiritually before He created them physically (Moses 3:5).
  • The Lord made every plant before it was in the earth (Gen. 2:4–6; Abr. 5:5).
  • By the power of my Spirit created I all things—first spiritual, secondly temporal (D&C 29:31–32).
  • That which is temporal is in the likeness of that which is spiritual (D&C 77:2).
  • God made the world and men before they were in the flesh (Moses 6:51).

​Elder John A. Widtsoe:
“Latter-day Saints believe that the Lord formed or organized the earth from existing universal materials. That it is impossible to create something from nothing is a spiritual as well as a scientific axiom. It is an established doctrine of the Church that the ultimate elements which constitute the universe are eternal, indestructible, and everlasting.” (Evidences and Reconciliations, 1:140)

“To say that everything came from the Big Bang is like saying babies come from maternity wards—true in a narrow sense, but it hardly goes back far enough. Where did the stuff that went “bang” come from? What was it? Why did it bang?” (Alan H. Joseph Smith:
“In the beginning, the head of the Gods called a council of the Gods; and they came together and concocted a plan to create the world and people it.” (TPJS p 349)

​Joseph Smith:   “Now the word create came from the word baurau which does not mean to create out of nothing; it means to organize; the same as a man would organize materials and build a ship.
 
“Hence, we infer that God had materials to organize the world out of chaos – chaotic matter, which is element, and in which dwells all the glory.
 
“Element had an existence from the beginning.  The pure principles of element are principles which can never be destroyed; they may be organized and re-organized, but not destroyed.  They had no beginning, and can have no end.” (TPJS p 350-352)

Genesis 1:2 God ‘hovered’ (moved) over the waters – “The Hebrew word occurs again only in Deut. 32:11, where it is descriptive of the eagle hovering over the young to care for them and protect them.” (J.H. Hertz, Pentateuch & Haftorahs, Hebrew Text English Translation & Commentary, p. 2)

Elder John A. Widtsoe: “The word translated 'day' in Genesis really means, in the original, an age or undefined period of time, and is so rendered in several translations of the Bible. Further, the first three 'days' could not have been days such as we have, for the sun and the moon had not yet been placed in the firmament. Moreover, the word 'day' is used frequently throughout the Bible in a general sense as 'the day of the Lord,' the day of vengeance,' 'the night is far spent, the day is at hand.’  (Evidences & Reconciliations, p. 147).

Genesis 1:6-8 "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters…”  “As used in the scriptures, firmament means expanse. The firmament of heaven is the expanse of heaven; it refers, depending upon the context, to either the atmospheric or the sidereal heavens." (Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p. 281).

President Joseph Fielding Smith: “If all the water was in one place, then naturally all the land was in one place; therefore, the shape of the earth, as to the water and the land surface, was not as we find it today. Then we read in Genesis that there came a time when the earth was divided … The Lord revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith that when he comes, as a part of the great restoration, this land surface will be brought back to its original form. When that time comes, the land of Zion (Western Hemisphere) and the land of Jerusalem "shall be turned back into their own place, and the earth shall be like as it was in the days before it was divided." (Doctrines of Salvation, 3:74-75).

Joseph Smith:  “On this day a solar system was organized to provide us with days & nights, times and seasons, etc. This solar system was apparently created somewhere other than where the earth was being created, as many of the Brethren have taught that when Adam and Eve partook of the “Forbidden Fruit” the earth physically fell into the orbit it is now in.” (Journal of Discourses 7:163, 8:8, 9:317, & 17:143; Smith (1954-1956), 1:75; Times & Seasons 3:672; Smith (1976), 181; Andrew F. How long did the creation process take?

Joseph Smith: “Eternity has been going on in this system almost two thousand five hundred and fifty-five millions of years,” or in other words, 2 Billion, 555 Million years! (See Times & Seasons 5:758, and Bruce R. McConkie, The Mortal Messiah, four volumes (Salt Lake City, UT: Deseret Book, 1980¬ 1981), 1:32-33.)

President David O. McKay stated that the earth took “millions of years” to prepare. (BYU Devotional, Oct. 30, 1956.) 

Elder B. H. Roberts: “The earth came into existence, as our scientists insist, by the accretion of nebulous matter; ... it took millions of years, for the condensation and solidification of that matter, granting as long periods as geologists may demand for the formation of the earth’s crust.” (B. H. Roberts, The Gospel and Man’s Relationship to Deity (Salt Lake City, UT: Deseret Book, 1965.), 278.) 

Elder John A. Widtsoe: “The creative periods included much time.” (John A. Widtsoe, Joseph Smith as Scientist (Salt Lake City, UT: The General Board and Young Men's Mutual Improvement Association, 1908), 56-59.)

Genesis 1:22 Note:  God creates and then blesses the animals.

President Joseph Fielding Smith: “The simple answer is that animals do have spirits and that through the redemption made by our Savior they will come forth in the resurrection to enjoy the blessing of immortal life. The Bible as it has come to us through numerous translations and copies does not contain the information concerning the immortality of the animal world in the clearness which, without any doubt, it was invested with the pure inspiration of the revelations of the Lord. However, there are some passages which still remain bearing witness to the eternal nature of the animal world.” (Answers to Gospel Questions, 2:48.)
“All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny.” (The Family: A Proclamation to the World)

First Presidency:  "All men and women are in the similitude of the universal Father and Mother, and are literally the sons and daughters of deity; as spirits they were the offspring of celestial parentage."  (Messages of the 1st Presidency, 4:203) 

Joseph Fielding Smith: "Female spirits were created in the image of a 'Mother in Heaven.'"  (Joseph Fielding Smith, Answers to Gospel Questions, 3:144) 

Elder Melvin J. Ballard: "No matter to what heights God has attained or may attain, he does not stand alone; for side by side with him, in all her glory, a glory like unto his, stands a companion, the Mother of his children.  For as we have a Father in heaven, so also we have a Mother there, a glorified, exalted, ennobled Mother."  (Sermons of Melvin J. “The odds that the five elements (carbon, Hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur) may come together to form a molecule are 10160 to 1.  For it to occur in this world would require 10243 billions of years.”

“The Sabbath is the Lord’s day, set apart each week for rest and worship. In Old Testament times, God’s covenant people observed the Sabbath on the seventh day of the week because God rested on the seventh day when He had created the earth (see Genesis 2:2). After the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, which occurred on the first day of the week (see Mark 16:2), the Lord’s disciples began observing the Sabbath on the first day of the week, Sunday (see Acts 20:7).”
The Lord told Moses that Sabbath observance was a sign of the covenant between Him and His people and that if they would keep it holy they would know Him as their Lord and God (see Exodus 31:13; see also Ezekiel 20:20). President Russell M. Nelson: “I learned from the scriptures that my conduct and my attitude on the Sabbath constituted a sign between me and my Heavenly Father. With that understanding, I no longer needed lists of dos and don’ts. When I had to make a decision whether or not an activity was appropriate for the Sabbath, I simply asked myself, ‘What sign do I want to give to God?’ That question made my choices about the Sabbath day crystal clear” (“The Sabbath Is a Delight,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2015, 130).

Symbolism
  • East is the direction that represents the presence of God.
  • The Garden of Eden was itself a temple.  “The Garden of Eden, as it is referred to throughout the Bible, Pseudepigrapha, and rabbinic writings, served as the prototype, pattern, and/or originator of subsequent Israelite temples, "a type of archetypal sanctuary." ... Mircea Eliade has stated that the Garden of Eden was the heavenly prototype of the temple, and the Book of Jubilees 3:19 adds that "the garden of Eden is the Holy of Holies, and the dwelling of the Lord.” (Garden of Eden: Prototype Sanctuary Donald W. Parry, p. 126)
  • In Genesis 2:10-14, in which we are told that a river flows from Eden into four different directions. The # 4 in Hebrew means “Geographic Fullness” or “Totality.” 
  • The effects of Eden flow to all.

God ('ĕlōhîm) = God the Father or Christ
LORD (Adonai) = Christ
LORD (Yᵊhōvâ) = Christ
LORD God (Yᵊhōvâ 'ĕlōhîm) = Jesus Christ
Lord GOD (Adonai Yᵊhōvâ) – Lord Lord = LORD or GOD

“In this account [Gen 2] “God, now called YHWH 'Elohim instead of 'Elohim as in the first version, does not summon things into being from a lofty distance through the mere agency of divine speech, but works as a craftsman, fashioning (yatsar instead of tiara', create"), blowing life-breath into nostrils, building a woman from a rib. Whatever the disparate historical origins of the two accounts, the redaction gives us first a harmonious cosmic overview of creation and then a plunge into the technological nitty-gritty and moral ambiguities of human origins.” (Alder, The Hebrew Bible, A Translation with Commentary, p. 13)

President Joseph Fielding Smith: “If you want to stay here then you can not eat of that fruit.  If you want to stay here then I forbid you to eat it.  But you may act for yourself and you may eat of it if you want to, and if you eat it, you will die.” (“Fall -- Atonement -- Resurrection -- Sacrament,” in Charge To Religious Educators, 124. President Joseph Fielding Smith: “Just why the Lord would say to Adam that he forbade him to partake of the fruit of that tree is not made clear in the Bible account, but in the original as it comes to us in the book of Moses it is made definitely clear. It is that the Lord said to Adam that if he wished to remain as he was in the garden, then he was not to eat the fruit, but if he desired to eat it and partake of death he was at liberty to do so. So really it was not in the true sense a transgression of a divine commandment. Adam made the wise decision, in fact the only decision that he could make. It was the divine plan from the very beginning that man should be placed on the earth and be subject to mortal conditions and pass through a probationary state as explained in the Book of Mormon where he and his posterity would be subject to all mortal conditions.” (Joseph Fielding Smith, Improvement Era, April 1962, p. 231).

Elder David A. Bednar: “The natures of male and female spirits complete and perfect each  other, and therefore men and women are intended to progress together toward exaltation.

“… For divine purposes, male and female spirits are different, distinctive, and complementary.

“… The unique combination of spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional capacities of both males and females were needed to implement the plan of happiness. Alone, neither the man nor the woman could fulfill the purposes of his or her creation.

“… Because of their distinctive temperaments and capacities, males and females each bring to a marriage relationship unique perspectives and experiences. The man and the woman contribute differently but equally to a oneness and a unity that can be achieved in no other way. The man completes and perfects the woman and the woman completes and perfects the man as they learn from and mutually strengthen and bless each other. ‘Neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord’ (1 Corinthians 11:11; italics added).

President Russell M. Nelson:  “Interesting to me is the fact that animals fashioned by our Creator, such as dogs and cats, have thirteen pairs of ribs, but the human being has one less with only twelve. I presume another bone could have been used, but the rib, coming as it does from the side, seems to denote partnership. The rib signifies neither dominion nor subservience, but lateral relationship as partners, to work and to live, side by side.” (Russell M. Nelson, The Power Within Us, p. 108.)
