Moses chapter 1 gives the background to how and why Moses received the revelations recorded as the first few chapters of Genesis. As a result, this chapter serves as an excellent introduction to our study of the Old Testament this year. Moses expands our understanding of our pre-earth life. Moses and Abraham also increase our perspective by teaching us of the greatness of God and His creations.
In 1851 there were over 32,000 members of the Church in England. Elder Franklin D. Richards, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles who was presiding over the mission and the Church there, published a compilation of several revelations and texts of scripture by the Prophet Joseph Smith and called this collection “The Pearl of Great Price.” He said it would be:
“A source of much instruction and edification to many thousands of the Saints, who will by an acquaintance with its precious contents, be more abundantly qualified to set forth and defend the principles of our Holy Faith before all men.” (Millennial Star, 15 July 1851, 217).
The Pearl of Great Price Contains:
This great undertaking occupied a good portion of Joseph's time between June 1830 and July 1833. Robert J. Matthews, a prominent Latter-day Saint authority on the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible, wrote that procedurally "the Prophet and a scribe would sit at a table, with the Prophet having the King James Version of the Bible open before him. Probably he would read from the King James Version and dictate the revisions, while the scribe recorded what he said ...."The translation was not a simple, mechanical recording of divine dictum, but rather a study and thought process accompanied and prompted by revelation from the Lord. That it was a revelatory process is evident from statements by the Prophet and others who were personally acquainted with the work." ("A Plainer Translation": Joseph Smith's Translation of the Bible, a History and Commentary, p. 39). (H. Donl Peterson, The Pearl of Great Price: A History and Commentary, p.28)
Moses chapter 1 gives the background to how and why Moses received the revelations that were recorded as the first few chapters of Genesis (see Moses 1:30, 40–41).
The book of Moses is the Joseph Smith Translation of Genesis 1:1 through Genesis 6:13.
The vision recorded in Moses 1 took place after Jehovah spoke to Moses at the burning bush (see Moses 1:17) but before Moses led the children of Israel out of Egypt and through the Red Sea (see Moses 1:25–26).
Joseph Fielding Smith: "All revelation since the fall has come through Jesus Christ, who is the Jehovah of the Old Testament. … He is the God of Israel, the Holy One of Israel; the one who led that nation out of Egyptian bondage, and who gave and fulfilled the Law of Moses. The Father has never dealt with man directly and personally since the fall, and he has never appeared except to introduce and bear record of the Son." (Doctrines of Salvation, comp. Bruce R. McConkie, 3 vols. [1954–56], 1:27)
What does Moses learn about God?
Elder Neal A. Maxwell: “God does not live in the dimension of time as do we. We are not only hampered by our finiteness (experiential and intellectual), but also by being in the dimension of time. Moreover, God, since ‘all things are present’ with him, is not simply predicting based solely on the past. In ways that are not clear to us, he sees rather than foresees the future, because all things are at once present before him.” (Things As They Really Are [1978], 29; see also Alma 40:8; D&C 130:4–7).
What do WE learn about God from Moses?
Elder Deiter F. Uctdorf: "We are the literal spirit children of divine, immortal, and omnipotent Heavenly Parents!" (https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2016/10/o-how-great-the-plan-of-our-god?lang=eng)
Elder Deiter F. Uctdorf: “No matter your circumstances or trials in life, I urge you to remember who you are, where you came from, and where you are going — for the answers to those questions will truly provide confidence and direction for your life.” (https://www.thechurchnews.com/archives/2009-11-01/president-dieter-f-uchtdorf-the-reflection-in-the-water-68673)
First Presidency: “Man, as a spirit, was begotten and born of heavenly parents, and reared to maturity in the eternal mansions “of the Father," as an "offspring of celestial parentage," and further teaches that "all men and women are in the similitude of the universal Father and Mother, and are literally the sons and daughters of Deity" (https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/ensign/2002/02/the-origin-of-man?lang=eng)
Elder Neal A. Maxwell: “I speak not to the slackers in the kingdom but to those who carry their load and more, not to those lulled into false security, but to those buffeted by false insecurity, who through laboring devotedly in the kingdom have recurring feelings of falling forever short... The first thing to be said of this feeling of inadequacy is that it is normal,...following celestial road signs while in telestial traffic jams is not easy, especially when we are not just moving next door - or even across town." (Ensign, Nov. 1976, p. 12)
Satan = “to obstruct, oppose,” or “ to accuse or attack.”
Lucifer = “light bearer” or “shining one.”
Perdition = “loss or destruction.”
President Dallin H. Oaks: “Be careful how you characterize yourself. Don’t characterize or define yourself by some temporary quality. The only single quality that should characterize us is that we are a son or daughter of God. That fact transcends all other characteristics, including race, occupation, physical characteristics, honors, or even religious affiliation. …
“We have our agency, and we can choose any characteristic to define us. But we need to know that when we choose to define ourselves or to present ourselves by some characteristic that is temporary or trivial in eternal terms, we de-emphasize what is most important about us and we overemphasize what is relatively unimportant. This can lead us down the wrong path and hinder our eternal progress” (“How to Define Yourself,” New Era, June 2013, 48).
President David O. McKay: "Your greatest weakness will be the point at which Satan will try to tempt you, will try to win you; and if you have made yourself weak, he will add to that weakness. Resist him, and you will gain in strength. If he tempts you in another way, resist him again and he will become weaker. In turn, you become stronger, until you can say, no matter what your surroundings may be, 'Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.' (Luke 4:8) ...."Remember, you cannot tamper with the evil one. Resist temptation, resist Satan, and he will flee from you." (Improvement Era, July 1968, p. 3.)
Elder Deiter F. Uctdorf: “Discovering who we really are is part of this great adventure called life. Mankind’s greatest minds have wrestled endlessly with these questions: Where did we come from? Why are we here? What happens after we die? And how does all this fit together—how does it make sense?
“Once we begin to understand the answers to these questions—not with the mind only, but with the heart and the soul—we will begin to understand who we are, and we will feel like the wanderer who is finally finding home. … Everything finally makes sense” (“The Reflection in the Water” [Church Educational System fireside for young adults, Nov. 1, 2009]; LDS.org).
President Joseph Fielding Smith: “Immortality and eternal life are two separate things, one distinct from the other. Every man shall receive immortality, whether he be good, bad, or indifferent, for the resurrection from the dead shall come to all.
“Eternal life is something in addition. None shall receive eternal life save it be those who keep the commandments of the Lord and are entitled thus to enter into his presence. . . .That is eternal life, to dwell in the presence of the Father and receive exaltation from him” (Doctrines of Salvation, comp. Bruce R. McConkie, 3 vols. [1954–56], 2:4–5).
After quoting Moses 1:39, President Marion G. Romney, who was a counselor in the First Presidency, said: “Hence, we see the complete unselfishness of our Father in Heaven. His whole work and glory is to bring eternal life and happiness to his children. Should not our whole purpose in this life, therefore, be made up of righteous service one to another? If not, how can we ever hope to be as he is?” (in Conference Report, Oct. 1981, 132; or Ensign, Nov. 1981, 93).
Elder Marion G. Romney: “Jesus Christ, in the sense of being its Creator and Redeemer, is the Lord of the whole universe. Except for his mortal ministry accomplished on this earth, his service and relationship to other worlds and their inhabitants are the same as his service and relationship to this earth and its inhabitants. . . .
“. . . In short, Jesus Christ, through whom God created the universe, was chosen to put into operation throughout the universe Elohim’s great plan ‘to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man’—the gospel of Jesus Christ—the only way whereby man can obtain eternal life.” (“Jesus Christ: Lord of the Universe,” Improvement Era, Nov. 1968, 46, 48; see also D&C 76:19–24).
Joseph F. McConkie: "No teaching device is used more effectively or frequently in the scriptures to expand understanding than 'likening' the principle being taught to something already understood by those being instructed. This is what is taking place in Abraham 3. The chapter divides itself into very natural parts: the first seventeen verses deal with planets and their relationship one to another; the last eleven verses speak of pre-earth spirits and their relationships one to another. At first glance, it may appear that Abraham is dealing with two separate ideas, each deserving a chapter of its own.
“A more careful reading, however, reveals that the second part of the chapter is a deliberate restatement of the first. Each principle describing the relationship of one star of planet to another proves to be equally descriptive of the nature and relationship of pre-earth spirits one to another. The revelation on planets ends in the eighteenth verse where the revelation on pre-earth spirits begins. The two parts of the revelation are welded at that point with the words 'as, also,' which is simply to say what is true of the stars is 'also' true of the spirits."The leading role in the vision of the planets obviously goes to Kolob. …“ ("The Heavens Testify of Christ," in Studies in Scripture, Vol. Two: The Pearl of Great Price, ed. by Millet and Jackson, pp.239-245.)
Joseph Smith: "I want to reason a little on this subject. I learned it by translating the papyrus which is now in my house. I learned a testimony concerning Abraham, and he reasoned concerning the God of Heaven. 'In or to do that,' said he, 'suppose we have two facts: that supposes another fact may exist--two men on the earth, one wiser than the other, would logically show that another who is wiser than the wisest may exist. Intelligences exist one above another, so that there is no end to them.’
"If Abraham reasoned thus--If Jesus Christ was the Son of God, and John discovered that God the Father of Jesus Christ had a Father, you may suppose that He had a Father also. Where was there ever a son without a father? And where was there ever a father without first being a son? … Hence if Jesus had a Father, can we not believe that He had a Father also? I despise the idea of being scared to death at such a doctrine, for the Bible is full of it."
“I want you to pay particular attention to what I am saying. Jesus said that the Father wrought precisely in the same way as His Father had done before Him. As the Father had done before. He laid down his life, and took it up the same as His Father had done before." (HC, 6: 476-77.)
Joseph Fielding Smith: “Some of our writers have endeavored to explain what an intelligence is, but to do so is futile, for we have never been given any insight into this matter beyond what the Lord has fragmentarily revealed. We know, however, that there is something called intelligence which always existed. It is the real eternal part of man, which was not created or made. This intelligence combined with the spirit constitutes a spiritual identity or individual.” (The Spiritual Progress of Man, p. 11)
Hugh B. Brown: “We believe that before the creation of the body, all men existed as intelligence. These intelligences were not created or made, neither indeed can be (D&C 93:29); the intelligent entity in man...is a selfexisting entity, uncreated and eternal. Thus man is crowned with the dignity which belongs to his divine and eternal nature.” (Conference Report, Apr. 1969, p. 51)
President Spencer W. Kimball: “Remember, in the world before we came here, faithful women were given certain assignments while faithful men were foreordained to certain priesthood tasks. While we do not now remember the particulars, this does not alter the glorious reality of what we once agreed to.” (https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/teachings-spencer-w-kimball/chapter-20?lang=eng¶=p9#p9)
President Ezra Taft Benson: “For nearly six thousand years, God has held you in reserve to make your appearance in the final days before the second coming of the Lord. Some individuals will fall away; but the kingdom of God will remain intact to welcome the return of its head – even Jesus Christ. While our generation will be comparable in wickedness to the days of Noah, when the Lord cleansed the earth by flood there is a major difference this time. It is that God has saved for the final inning some of His strongest children, who will help bear off the kingdom triumphantly. That is where you come in, for you are the generation that must be prepared to meet your God.” (CES Devotional Anaheim CA 8 Feb 1987)
President Russell M. Nelson: “You are one of God's noble and great spirits, held in reserve to come to this earth at this time. In your premortal life you were appointed to help prepare the world for the greatest gathering of souls that will precede the Lord's second coming. You are one of a covenant people. You are an heir to the promise that all the earth will be blessed by the seed of Abraham and that God's covenant with Abraham will be fulfilled through his lineage in these latter days.” (Ensign, Nov. 1990, p. 73)

Teaching Thoughts:
- Discuss the eternal importance of knowing that we are daughters and sons of God. Knowing this provides confidence and direction in our lives.
- Discussion on what helps us identify and resist Satan’s temptations. How does knowing God and His love help us?
- If God is the God of the universe, why does he care so much about me?
- “You are one of God’s noble and great spirits.”
