Section 84

Below are the quotes that were used in the video.

The Priesthood is a major focus of Section 84. In the video we focus on the role of the priesthood in women's and men's life. We look at the important role of the Book of Mormon in our lives and a recipe for friendship with Christ. All the quotes that I use in this video can be found at BrotherMiller.org or BrotherRMiller.wordpress.org.

Background:

"On the night of the 22 and 23 of September 1832, Evan was one of the favored six Elders who with the Prophet united their hearts and voices and received the glorious revelation, Section 84 of the Doctrine and Covenants.

"His testimony concerning that experience was so sublime and sacred—a nature that he rarely told and then only as a promotive of faith to his family and a few others.

"His testimony in part was, that it would be impossible to describe the heavenly halo which surrounded the prophet, the glory which shone upon his countenance or the exquisite cadence of the voice in which he spoke.

"It was as though they beheld the face of the Lord Jesus. And they did hear his words as he declared those truths." (Evan Melbourne Greene Compiled from several life sketches: by Elaine N. Coleman)

"Just previous to the Prophet’s rising and commencing to give voice to the revelation Oliver Cowdery came into the room and taking a chair, seated himself in front of the fire, the night being chilly and he remained thus with his back towards the others, who sat around the table all the time Joseph was speaking.

"As soon as the “Amen” was spoken, Oliver arose quickly and turning to the others asked, “ Boys, have you got that written?” We had not. They had sat as if transfixed watching and listening.

"No man had thought of writing, Oliver whisked his chair about to the table saying,” We shall want that.” And in about the same length of time the Prophet had consumed in giving the revelation vocally, Oliver had written it. He read it over aloud and only two or three slight corrections were made by the Prophet." (Evan Melbourne Greene, compiled from several life sketches: by Elaine N. Coleman)

Elder Richard G. Scott: “Write down in a secure place the important things you learn from the Spirit. You will find that as you write down precious impressions, often more will come. Also, the knowledge you gain will be available throughout your life.” (“To Acquire Knowledge and the Strength to Use It Wisely,” Ensign, June 2002, 32.)

Elder Tad R Callister: “One of the ways we can enhance our personal revelation is to write down and record spiritual insights and impressions when they come. When we do so, we show the Lord we value His counsel and are ready for more.” (https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/church/news/record-spiritual-insights-to-receive-more-revelation-in-your-life?lang=eng).

Joseph Smith: “The Priesthood is an everlasting principle and existed with God from eternity and will to eternity, without beginning of days or end of years.
“The keys have to be brought from heaven whenever the Gospel is sent.” (TPJS p 157)

President Dallin H. Oaks: “President Joseph F. Smith described the priesthood as “the power of God delegated to man by which man can act in the earth for the salvation of the human family.” Other leaders have taught us that the priesthood “is the consummate power on this earth. It is the power by which the earth was created.” The scriptures teach that “this same Priesthood, which was in the beginning, shall be in the end of the world also” (Moses 6:7). Thus, the priesthood is the power by which we will be resurrected and proceed to eternal life.

“The understanding we seek begins with an understanding of the keys of the priesthood. “Priesthood keys are the authority God has given to priesthood [holders] to direct, control, and govern the use of His priesthood on earth.” Every act or ordinance performed in the Church is done under the direct or indirect authorization of one holding the keys for that function. As Elder M. Russell Ballard has explained, “Those who have priesthood keys … literally make it possible for all who serve faithfully under their direction to exercise priesthood authority and have access to priesthood power.” (https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2014/04/the-keys-and-authority-of-the-priesthood?lang=eng)

President Dallin H. Oaks: “With the exception of the sacred work that sisters do in the temple under the keys held by the temple president … only one who holds a priesthood office can officiate in a priesthood ordinance. And all authorized priesthood ordinances are recorded on the records of the Church … At general conference many years ago, President Spencer W. Kimball reminded us that there are other priesthood keys that have not been given to man on the earth, including the keys of creation and resurrection.” (https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2014/04/the-keys-and-authority-of-the-priesthood?lang=eng)

President Dallin H. Oaks: “But even though these presiding authorities hold and exercise all of the keys delegated to men in this dispensation, they are not free to alter the divinely decreed pattern that only men will hold offices in the priesthood.” (https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2014/04/the-keys-and-authority-of-the-priesthood?lang=eng)

President Dallin H. Oaks: “How does this apply to women? In an address to the Relief Society, President Joseph Fielding Smith, then President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, said this: “While the sisters have not been given the Priesthood, it has not been conferred upon them, that does not mean that the Lord has not given unto them authority. … A person may have authority given to him, or a sister to her, to do certain things in the Church that are binding and absolutely necessary for our salvation, such as the work that our sisters do in the House of the Lord.

“They have authority given unto them to do some great and wonderful things, sacred unto the Lord, and binding just as thoroughly as are the blessings that are given by the men who hold the Priesthood.”

In that notable address, President Smith said again and again that women have been given authority. To the women he said, “You can speak with authority, because the Lord has placed authority upon you.”

“He also said that the Relief Society “[has] been given power and authority to do a great many things. The work which they do is done by divine authority.” And, of course, the Church work done by women or men, whether in the temple or in the wards or branches, is done under the direction of those who hold priesthood keys. Thus, speaking of the Relief Society, President Smith explained, “[The Lord] has given to them this great organization where they have authority to serve under the directions of the bishops of the wards … , looking after the interest of our people both spiritually and temporally.”

“Thus, it is truly said that Relief Society is not just a class for women but something they belong to—a divinely established appendage to the priesthood.

“We are not accustomed to speaking of women having the authority of the priesthood in their Church callings, but what other authority can it be? When a woman—young or old—is set apart to preach the gospel as a full-time missionary, she is given priesthood authority to perform a priesthood function.

“The same is true when a woman is set apart to function as an officer or teacher in a Church organization under the direction of one who holds the keys of the priesthood. Whoever functions in an office or calling received from one who holds priesthood keys exercises priesthood authority in performing her or his assigned duties.

Whoever exercises priesthood authority should forget about their rights and concentrate on their responsibilities.” (https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2014/04/the-keys-and-authority-of-the-priesthood?lang=eng)

What are "the mysteries of the kingdom" and "the power of godliness"?In his two great revelations on priesthood, the Lord declares that the higher priesthood holds the "keys of the mysteries of the kingdom." These mysteries include sacred truths that are known only by revelation: to have "the knowledge of God" (D&C 84:19), "to have the heavens opened," and to "enjoy the communion and presence of God the Father and Jesus" (D&C 107:19). In an earlier revelation Jesus Christ indicated that other sacred mysteries include "my will concerning all things pertaining to my kingdom," the "wonders of eternity," and "things to come" (D&C 76:7 8). The "power of godliness" the ability to acquire godlike attributes and qualify to be in his presence is made fully available only through the ordinances of the Melchizedek Priesthood (D&C 84:20-21)”. (Richard O. Cowan, Answers to Your Questions About the Doctrine and Covenants, 97)

What are the differences between Melchizedek and Aaronic priesthood?

Joseph Smith:
"All Priesthood is Melchizedek, but there are different portions or degrees of it. That portion which brought Moses to speak with God face to face was taken away, but that which brought the ministry of angels remained. All the prophets had the Melchizedek Priesthood and were ordained by God himself." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pp. 180-181, 5 Jan. 1841.)

Oath:  a solemn promise, often invoking a divine witness regarding ones future actions or behaviors.  God makes the oath.

Covenant:
An agreement between to parties.

President Thomas S. Monson:
"The Prophet Joseph was often asked, 'Brother Joseph, what do you mean by magnifying a calling?'"Joseph replied: 'What does it mean to magnify a calling? It means to build it up in dignity and importance, to make it honorable and commendable in the eyes of all men, to enlarge and strengthen it, to let the light of heaven shine through it to the view of other men. And how does one magnify a calling? Simply by performing the service that pertains to it.' " (British Area CR, August 1971, p. 145.)

SONS OF
(1828) - Hebraism, which denotes that persons possess the qualities.

" `Sons of Moses,' and `sons of Aaron' do not refer to their literal descendants only, for all who are faithful and obtain these Priesthoods, and magnify their calling, are sanctified by the Spirit and become the `sons' of Moses and of Aaron, and the seed of Abraham, as well as the Church and Kingdom, and the elect of God." (Smith, Hyrum M., and Janne M. Sjodahl, Doctrine and Covenants Commentary, p. 504.)

President Joseph Fielding Smith:
“Who are the sons of Aaron and Levi today?  They are, by virtue of the blessings of the Almighty, those who are ordained by those who hold the authority to officiate in the offices of the priesthood.  It is written that those so ordained become the sons of Moses and of Aaron." (Doctrines of Salvation, 3:93.)

President Marion G. Romney:
"Who are his servants?  They are his representatives in the offices of the Priesthood  the General, Stake, Priesthood Quorum, and Ward officers.  It behooves us to keep this in mind when we are tempted to disregard our presiding authorities, bishops, quorum and stake presidents, etc., when, within the jurisdiction of their callings, they give us counsel and advice." (Conference Report, Oct. 1960, p. 73.)

Neal A. Maxwell:
If Joseph Smith had been the conduit for only one such divine revelation, it would be, standing alone, sufficient to ensure his prophetic greatness. Yet even though God wants to give us “all that He hath,” we suffer from a poverty of perceptions! (D&C 84:38). (Conference Report, Oct. 2003, 106; or Ensign, Nov. 2003, 101)

Elder Tad R. Callister:
"The priesthood in the boy is just as powerful as the priesthood in the man when exercised in righteousness." (https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2013/04/the-power-of-the-priesthood-in-the-boy?lang=eng).

President N. Eldon Tanner:
"Every individual has the right to and can have the Light of Christ in his life as an abiding influence. But he must earn that privilege and blessing." (Conference Report, October 1977, p. 77.)

President James E. Faust:
"The great religious leaders of the world such as Mohammed, Confucius, and the Reformers, as well as philosophers including Socrates, Plato, and others, received a portion of God's light.  Moral truths were given to them by God to enlighten whole nations and to bring a higher level of understanding to individuals." (Ensign, May 1980, p. 12.)

President Ezra Taft Benson:
"Now, we have not been using the Book of Mormon as we should. Our homes are not as strong unless we are using it to bring our children to Christ. Our families may be corrupted by worldly trends and teachings unless we know how to use the book to expose and combat the falsehoods in socialism, organic evolution, rationalism, humanism, etc. Our missionaries are not as effective unless they are `hissing forth' with it. Social, ethical, cultural, or educational converts will not survive under the heat of the day unless their taproots go down to the fullness of the gospel which the Book of Mormon contains. Our Church classes are not as spirit filled unless we hold it up as a standard. And our nation will continue to degenerate unless we read and heed the words of the God of this land, Jesus Christ, and quit building up and upholding the secret combinations which the Book of Mormon tells us proved the downfall of both previous American civilizations." (Ensign, May 1975, p. 65.)

Elder Boyd K. Packer:
"The powerful missionary spirit and the vigorous missionary activity in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints becomes a very significant witness that the true gospel and that the authority are possessed here in the Church.  We accept the responsibility to preach the gospel to every person on earth.  And if the question is asked, "You mean you are out to convert the entire world?” the answer is, "Yes.  We will try to reach every living soul.”
"Some who measure that challenge quickly say, "Why, that’s impossible!   It cannot be done!”
"To that we simply say, "Perhaps, but we shall do it anyway." (Conf. Report, Oct. 1975, p. 145.)

Teaching Thoughts:
  1. Considering Christ as our friend.  How are you feeling about “this commandment, that ye become even as my friends in days when I was with them…” (84:77)?
  2. What will you do to more diligently study the Book of Mormon and live the truths you learn from it?
  3. When revelation comes this week, write it down and act on it.
