There are four women who viewed the plates of gold. Lucy Harris said that a "personage appeared to her" and showed her the plates. But that was not enough for her. She soon sought a greater witness. Her husband brought home 116 pages of the translation and they were lost. That is the background for the Lord teaching Joseph Smith, as well as us, that whenever we choose our way over the Lord’s way, we will fail! God’s plan is not frustrated by our mistakes and sins. If God planned hundreds of years in advance for the loss of 116 pages of scripture then we can know that he has planned to help us in our most difficult times when we feel hopeless, and all is lost.

Mary Musselman Whitmer’s encounter is described by her son, David:  “…my mother was going to milk the cows, when she was met out near the yard by the same old man (judging by her description of him) [whom David had seen on the roadside in a prior incident] who said to her, ‘You have been very faithful and diligent in your labors, but you are tired because of the increase of your toil, it is proper therefore that you should receive a witness that your faith may be strengthened.’ Thereupon he showed her the plates.” (David Whitmer, interview with Orson Pratt and Joseph F. John C. Whitmer added: “[The personage] turned the plates over, leaf after leaf, and also showed her the engravings upon them; after which he told her to be patient and faithful in bearing her burden a little longer, promising that if she would do so, she should be blessed; and her reward would be sure, if she proved faithful to the end. The personage then suddenly vanished with the plates, and where he went, she could not tell.” (John C. ​Lucy Mack Smith: “I have seen and handled the golden plates. They are about eight inches long, and six wide; some of them are sealed together and not to be opened, and some of them are loose. Emma Smith: “Emma felt obliged at times to “lift and move [the covered plates] when she swept and dusted . . .” though she would not “uncover them to look . . .”.
“I once felt of the plates,” she admitted, “as they thus lay on the table, tracing their outline and shape. They seemed to be pliable like thick paper, and would rustle with a metallic sound when the edges were moved by the thumb, as one does sometimes thumb the edges of a book.” (“Last Testimony of Sister Emma,” 290.)

Lucy Harris: "She said that a personage appeared to her, who told her, that as she had disputed the servant of the Lord, and said his word was not to be believed, and had also asked him many improper questions, she had done that which was not right in the sight of God. After which he said to her, 'Behold, here are the plates, look upon them and believe.' After giving us an account of her dream, she described the record very minutely." Joseph Smith: “Sometime after Mr. [Martin] Harris had begun to write for me, he began to importune me to give him liberty to carry the writings home and show them; and desired of me that I would inquire of the Lord, through the Urim and Thummim, if he might not do so. I did inquire, and the answer was that he must not. However, he was not satisfied with this answer, and desired that I should inquire again. I did so, and the answer was as before. Still he could not be contented, but insisted that I should inquire once more. After much solicitation I again inquired of the Lord, and permission was granted him to have the writings on certain conditions;"

“which were, that he show them only to his brother, Preserved Harris, his own wife, his father and his mother, and a Mrs. Cobb, a sister to his wife. In accordance with this last answer, I required of him that he should bind himself in a covenant to me in a most solemn manner that he would not do otherwise than had been directed. He did so. He bound himself as I required of him, took the writings, and went his way. Notwithstanding, however, the great restrictions which he had been laid under, and the solemnity of the covenant which he had made with me, he did show them to others, and by stratagem they got them away from him, and they never have been recovered unto this day.” (History of the Church, 1:21).

Lucy Mack Smith recalled the day that Martin Harris came to their home in Manchester and told her son Joseph that he had lost the manuscript pages:
“I well remember that day of darkness…the heavens seemed clothed with blackness, and the earth shroud-ed with gloom. I have often said…that if a continual punishment, as severe as that which we experienced on that occasion, were to be inflicted upon the most wicked characters who ever stood upon the footstool of the Almighty – if their punishment were no greater than that, I should feel to pity their condition.” (REHPJS, p.171.)

“I besought him (Joseph) not to mourn so, for perhaps the Lord would forgive him, after a short season of humiliation and repentance. But what could I do to comfort him, when he saw all the family in the same situation of mind as himself; for sobs and groans, and the most bitter lamentations filled the house. However, Joseph was more distressed than the rest, as he better understood the consequences of disobedience. And he continued pacing back and forth, meantime weeping and grieving, until about sunset, when, by persuasion, he took a little nourishment. The next morning, he set out for home. We parted with heavy hearts, for it now appeared that all which we had so fondly anticipated, and which had been the source of so much secret gratification, had in a moment fled forever.” (HJS, p. 129).

Joseph Smith: "Immediately after my return home I was walking out a little distance, when Behold the former heavenly messenger appeared and handed to me the Urim and Thummim again (for it had been taken from me in consequence of my having wearied the Lord in asking for the privilege of letting Martin Harris take the writings, which he lost by transgression) and I inquired of the Lord through it and obtained the following revelation.

Section 3 is a masterpiece to teach us:

1. Whenever we choose our way over the Lord’s way – we will fall/fail!

4. The Lord’s foreknowledge is always magnificent and reassuring.

Maxwell: “Because the centerpiece of the Atonement is already in place, we know that everything else in God’s plan will likewise finally succeed … In His plans for the human family, long ago God made ample provision for all mortal mistakes. His purposes will all triumph and without abrogating man’s moral agency. Moreover, all His purposes will come to pass in their time.” (Ensign [CR] November 1990, p. 15).

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland: “It strikes me that there is a wiser purpose than that [compensating for the loss of the 116 pages], or, more accurately, a wiser purpose in that. The key to such a suggestion of a wiser purpose is in D&C 10:45. As the Lord instructs Joseph on the procedure for translating and inserting the material from the small plates into what had been begun as the translation of the abridged large plates, he says, ‘Behold, there are many things engraven upon the [small] plates of Nephi which do throw greater views upon my gospel’. So, clearly, this was not a quid pro quo in the development of the final Book of Mormon product. It was not tit for tat, this for that—you give me 116 pages of manuscript and I’ll give you 142 pages of printed text. Not so. We got back more than we lost. Joseph Smith: “Whatever God requires is right, no matter what it is, although we may not see the reason thereof till long after the events transpire.” (Dean C. Jessee (editor), The Personal Writings of Joseph Smith, p. 507-509).

President Joseph Fielding Smith: "…it contains sufficient counsel and instruction for a lifetime of study. No one has yet mastered it.

Perhaps there is no other revelation in all our scriptures that embodies greater instruction pertaining to the manner of qualification of members of the Church for the service of God, and in such condensed form than this revelation." (Church History and Modern Revelation, 1:35).

Joseph Smith: “I continued my supplications to God, without cessation, and on the twenty-second of September, I had the joy and satisfaction of again receiving the Urim and Thummim, with which I have again commenced translating, and Emma writes for me, but the angel said that the Lord would send me a scribe, and I trust that it will be so.” (The Revised and Enhanced History of Joseph Smith By His Mother, Bookcraft, 1996, p 175).

In Section 5, the Lord is speaking of Martin Harris.  What witnesses has he received? 

1. Testimony that Joseph Smith is a Prophet.  
2. The Charles Anthon witness that the charter sketches off the gold plates are real.
3. He wrote as a scribe for the Prophet in translation of the gold plates.  
4. He knows of the witnesses to be and he now wants to be one of them.

Teaching Thoughts:

1. Section 3 – The Lord’s foreknowledge is reassuring.  Our faith in Christ includes reassurance that God has a plan for us.  He knows how to bring us to Him!
2. Repentance => forgiveness => still chosen / receive the promised blessings.
3. The Lord’s foreknowledge is always magnificent and reassuring.
4. Section 4 = Introduce by asking family, or class to think of a responsibility, calling, assignment, etc. - Read section 4 and look for how the Lord wants them to approach this responsibility or aspect of their life?
5. Section 5 What does this section teach you about the character of Christ?
